Seventeen-year-olds Brad Hudgell and Andrew McEwan demonstrated their increasing stature by making their mark at the Braintree Table Tennis League individual preliminary events at the weekend.

Hudgell won the major plaudits for beating two seeds in the men’s singles while McEwan and his partner Andy Dosher upset predictions by knocking the holders and No.1 seeds Ian and Peter Hayden out of the men’s doubles....

When Paul Davison won the Braintree Table Tennis League cadets’ singles at the age of 12 in 1989, there was a general assumption that he would one day lift the men’s singles.

It took him 19 years, but at the league’s finals night on Thursday he finally achieved his ambition.
